(a translation from the german larpwiki)
Most people come to this hobby over friends and relatives. But what to do, when you want to play but don´t know anybody that has visited a Larp before?
Well, just do it. Nearly every weekend whole over europe you can find an event taking place, for sure there will be one that fits you. On the coming wiki site EventTimer? you should find some links to online calendars with the dates of most events. On the also upcoming site LarpAssociations? you may find a group near to you.
Most of your questions can be answered with the LarpFAQ? (not open yet) site with links to different european FAQ-Sites.
For the start: German Larp-FAQ
Do it with your friends or visit the event alone - that doesn´t matter. If you´re going alone, try to join a group. It´s easy to find a InGame? Reason:
*“I´m a defenseless travelling peasant, please could i walk some of the way with you?” or *“My name is Marcalla, Mercenary. How about an extra fighting sword in your group? Here, take some of my wine to still your thirst” or *“Great Sir, may i ask you a question sir? Do you need a healer? Maybe i can be worthy for you with my humble healing skills?”
It would not be amiss to tell the referees and the organisators that you are a newcomer before the game starts. Most of them will be pleased to help you a little and making it easier for you to start the game.
When visiting an event alone as a newbie - it´s a not so good idea to start with a somewhat uncommunicative role like the “frowning dark witch that talks only to insult the others around”. Not that this is not a good role - but you will stay alone.
If you worry about “the right way of talking InGame?” - lets name it “Old School Speech” - forget it. Speaking like your ancestors from the middleages is even for older gamers a disputable matter. Just try not to use modern slang words and talk normal.
